CHAPTER SIX

“You don’t have to sleep on the sofa,” Bree said, leaning on the back of the sofa.

She trailed her fingers gently over Blake’s stomach and chest. His eyes were still closed, but a grin tugged at the corners of his mouth. She trailed her fingers up his neck and traced his lips.

“Are you inviting me to your bedroom?” Blake asked, opening one eye.

“Yes,” Bree nodded. “We have a lot to talk about.”

Blake sat up and bent his head to either side. His neck popped and he stretched his arms high above his head. He had transformed earlier in the day, but his skin was already beginning to feel too small again. Whenever he thought about the danger they would be facing tomorrow night, the bear within threatened to rip through his flesh.

Bree rested her hands on his shoulders, “You’re too tense.”

“It comes along with guard duty,” he said pointing at Harvey who was asleep in the chair he was still bound to.

“You need to give the guy back his pants,” she laughed softly and began to massage Blake’s shoulders.

His muscles flexed and relaxed under her touch.

“Damn, that feels good,” he said relaxing into her touch. “I was considering making him raid CASO headquarters like that. He’s a coward. He doesn’t deserve dignity.”

“CASO’s a scary organization,” Bree said climbing over the back of the sofa and sitting next to him.

She entwined her fingers through his as she spoke.

“He was frightened.”

“That’s no excuse.”

“Maybe not, but Blake, I refuse to become like them. They stole my memories. They took everything good away from me. They changed my very DNA and now I can’t even use those alterations to protect myself. I want those bastards dead as much as you do, but I want clean humane kills. No torture. No humiliation. They might have added animal DNA to my body, but they didn’t take away my humanity. I am who I am and that’s not going to change.”

Blake wrapped his arm around Bree’s shoulders and kissed her temple. She moved so that her forehead rested against his.

“Do you know what I see when I look into your eyes, Blake?”

“What’s that?”

“I see a good person. If I look hard enough and concentrate I see years of memories with the man I fell in love with before CASO flopped out. I don’t see a soldier. I see a man fighting, because he was pushed into it. You were forced into it just like the rest of us, but you’re a good person, Blake. Don’t let them take that away from you. Tomorrow this all ends. Either they’re dead or we are. If I have to die tomorrow trying to be free of them I’m going to die knowing that they didn’t take my humanity away, Blake.”

Blake wrapped his arms around Bree and pulled her into his lap. He kissed her forehead and closed his eyes. Their bodies reacted to the closeness as if they had never parted. Bree bit her lip and looked up at Blake through her lashes.
